The Safe and Sound Campaign is a citywide
effort to significantly improve the well-being of Baltimore's
children, youth, and their families by mobilizing the entire
community, using data to drive decision-making, instituting
best practice approaches and identifying sufficient and sustainable
resources.
The Campaign began in 1997 when more
than 7,000 people gathered to begin to create a plan of action.
The community's vision was that Baltimore's babies should
be born healthy, that children should live in nurturing families
and enter school ready to learn; that children and adolescents
should make healthy choices about their lives, that they should
be prepared for and should succeed in school, be safe in their
neighborhoods and above all know that they are genuinely valued
by the adults in the community.
Five strategies are in place to implement
these goals. They are the Success By 6®-Family Support
Strategy; After School Strategy; Reading By Nine Strategy;
Operation Safe Neighborhoods (violence reduction strategy);
and Youth and Community Engagement Strategy.
